Dundee Social lifted the Alex Smith Trophy today with a 2-1 win over Tayport at Caird Park Stadium. Tayport took an early first half lead but Craig Flynn levelled before half time for the dark blues. The second half saw chances at both ends before Kevin Robertson hit a terrific winner. This has been an average season by Social standards but they bow out season 08/09 with a fantastic fifth consecutive final win in the Alex Smith Trophy.
Cutty Sark have a hand and a bit on the Strathmore Glazing Premier Title. A tense game at Monymusk against Douglas Athletic produced a 3-3 scoreline, which means Cutty would have to lose by a cricket score next week against Michelin to hand the title to reigning Champions Douglas. Cutty took an early lead through Barry Heggie but Douglas came right back with goals from Terry ‘Smoothy’ Gray, Adam Turner and Mark ‘Bridget’ Neilson. They held this lead until the closing minutes when Paul Johnstone and James Thomson hit vital goals to set up a title party next Sunday. Douglas were left stunned but gaffer Jocky Stewart admitted a draw was about right and conceded that Cutty will tie it up next week and were worthy Champions. The Blue Man U wrap up their season in the Centre Cars League Cup Final on Sunday against Bonargrove.
Graham Webster and his Sandys side completed a successful first season in the Premier Division with a convincing 7-4 win over Douglas L.F.P. at Dawson Park. A brilliant hat trick from John Foley had them 3-0 up and further goals from Monday Ogbobe (Is he the best striker in Morning Football?) Steven Boyle with a double and David McDonald tied up a good win. Now after all that you would expect Webby to be a happy man….well it wouldn’t be Webby without a moan. First off he says he saw the worst penalty miss ever when Jamie Cant failed from the spot and then he went on about an amazing sitter which Sean Kelly somehow failed to put away. Come on Webby you scored seven goals …gie us a smile!!!
Lochee Central need a win in their last Pilot Garage First Division game against Doc Ferrys to complete a League and Cup Double. If they slip up and Harlequins beat Fintry Athletic in their last game the Quins lift the crown. If both win they will finish level on ponts but Lochee have a huge advantage in the goal difference tally, Lochee are + 41 , Quins are + 25. Harlequins were looking for Angus Thistle to do them a favour when they faced Lochee this morning. Well Thistle did nobody any favours and tarnished their reputation as one of the Associations longest serving members, when they failed to field a team for their game. Yes we have all been there injuries, call offs etc etc but if Angus Thistle had won or drawn their last game to still have a chance of the title, are you seriously trying to tell me they would not have had a coach load of players up for the game? Poor show Jags, I expected a lot better. On the same subject Four ‘Js also decided to finish their season early with a no show in their final game against Bayview. Not good enough by half and this will not be tolerated by the Association. Both Angus Thistle and Four J’s will be summoned before the League Executive Committee for an explanation!!
Now if you are bottom of the league and facing a team who reached the semi final of the Tayside Cup… well it might be a bit daunting. Hats off to Doc Ferrys who faced Fintry Athletic at Fintry Park and put on a fine show. Docs were actually 3-1 up at one point thanks to goals from Steve Forbes (2) and Ross Lennon but were eventually overcome by a good Fintry side inspired by the terrific Danny McGregor who capped an Inspired 90 minutes with a hat trick.

Congratulations all round today. First off a terrific game at Caird Park Stadium saw Billy Carlin’s Lochee Central come from behind to defeat Bayview and lift the Ross Kirk Trophy. Lochee dominated the first 15 minutes but it was Bayview who went in front against the run of play. The second half saw Lochee come racing out the blocks and they deservedly levelled and then went in front. The game raged from end to end and Bayview tried everything to take it into extra time, but it was the young Lochee side who were celebrating at the final whistle. A great game between two very good sides and played in a sporting manner. The Bayview lads were obviously very disappointed but they showed great dignity at the presentation ceremony. It will not be long before they are back contesting other cup finals.
It will be two morning sides in the Tayside Sunday Amateur Cup Final on Sunday 7th June. Cutty Sark made no mistake as they beat Anfield Road 6-0. Goals from Barry Heggie, Lee Hunt , Nicky Deuchars, Robbie Mcalpine (penalty) James Thomson and Paul Johnstone setting up a final against Tayport. These two sides will now face each other two weeks running in cup finals, they meet on Sunday 31st May in the McGuire Trophy Final at Caird Park Stadium.
Strathmore Glazing Premier Division Champions Douglas Athletic looked to have blown their chance of retaining the title as they trailed Tayport 1-2 with just 15 minutes to go, but wee Jocky’s boys came storming back to win 3-2 and set up a must win game next Sunday against Cutty Sark at Monymusk. A draw would suit Cutty who would then only have to avoid a heavy defeat in their last game at Michelin as their goal difference is better than Douglas to clinch the title. A win for Douglas would see Cutty needing to win their last game. On target for the Blue Man U were Terry ‘Smoothy’ Gray , Mark ‘Bridget’ Neilson and Matthew ‘Lifeboy’ Leitch. Sandys had a great away win at Michelin. Two goals for the prolific Monday Ogbobe who has had another brilliant season , Mark Gorthy and Steven Boyle. A man of the match performance here from Sandys Jamie Cant.
Dundee Social rounded off their league programme with a resounding 9-0 win against Crescent Star. An amazing seven goal haul for Keith McKenzie and a double from Kevin Robertson. Grant ‘The Bairn’ Samson in terrific form for the Social with their Cup final against Tayport just a week away. Bonargrove hit form to see off Douglas L.F.P. 6-2. Two goal Craig Stevens , Davie Hynd, Mark ‘Sheva’ Middleton, Lee Cochrane and Scott Campbell on the scoresheet.
Harlequins went back to the top of the Pilot Garage First Division after an amazing game at Downfield which all but ends Angus Thistle hopes. The Jags were actually two up at half time thanks to goals from Mark ‘Hirdy’ Hird and Dode Duncan but the Quins left them reeling in a terrific second half hitting four without reply. A late Scott Dolan goal made for a nervy last few minutes but Harlequins held on and will be hoping that the Jags can lift themselves to take something from cup winners Lochee Central next week. Harlequins are three points in front with one game remaining against Fintry Athletic on the 24th May. Lochee play Angus next week and finish off against Doc Ferrys on the 24th May. A brilliant finish to the season in both leagues and credit to all teams involved.

Hello again folks, hope you are all well. I was at the Tayport V Fintry, Tayside Cup Semi Final today and it was a brilliant game to watch between two very good sides. Tayport were ahead three times but could not shake off a young Fintry side. It was 2-2 at 90 minutes and the Fifers went ahead yet again in extra time but you just knew that Fintry would come back and they did to level for the third time. Just a few minutes left of the 120 and Tayport won a penalty which was then brilliantly saved by a limping Fintry keeper to take the game into a penalty shoot out. Tayport held their nerve to clinch a place in the Final on June 7th at North End Park, their third final of a brilliant season for the Fifers. A great game between two fine sides and it was good to see plenty of young players that were on show for both teams, if they can keep these players together these will be teams to watch next season.
The first domestic cup final takes place next Sunday at Caird Park Stadium when Bayview and Lochee Central meet in the Ross Kirk Trophy Final. Now this is a wee message to all teams competing in this years cup finals. These are show games for the Association and we expect the games to be played in a competitive, sporting manner. Just as important is the manner in which teams and supporters conduct themselves after the game has finished. We understand that defeated teams will be hurting, but you must show respect and dignity. We do not wish to see as very occasionally happens, players of the losing team throwing their toys out of the pram and stomping off to the dressing room. We insist that both teams are present at the presentation ceremony and that they give the occasion the respect it deserves. This also applies to supporters… it is quite simple - any misbehaviour and lack of respect from players or supporters will reflect on their team… who will find themselves very quickly before the Executive Committee to explain their actions. Last word on Cup Finals… to all the cup finalists, enjoy and give it your all, you never know when or indeed if there will be another one. Best of luck to you all!!
Despite going on about it again and again and again and again ZZZzzzzzzzzz YES we still get teams who do not phone in results. Step forward this week Harlequins, no result from their game with Four J’s. It is crucial especially at this time of season that results are logged and leagues updated. Come on lads get it sorted!!!!
We have had a few applications and notes of interest from teams wishing to join the Association for next season. Can I remind anyone who is interested that applications should be sent to Mr C. Reilly, 65D Sandeman Street, Dundee, DD3 7LB.
The Final monthly meeting of the season is next Monday 11th May, as usual be there or be fined. We have had a good attendance record for this seasons meetings keep it up. The date of the AGM will be announced at the meeting.
That’s it for now folks. All the best and take care. Alex.
